No...we are all prone to mood swings, but to be diagnosed with bi-polar, you need to have presented with clinical mania and clinical depression. There is a difference. The main problem with this diagnosis is that it mirrors emotionally dependant personality disorder - borderline type so closely, and the treatment recommendations are so different; one medication, and the other 'talking therapies'.

An individual does not have to present wilth mania & depressive symptoms alone, Bipolar is far more complex than that.

Also, Borderline Personality Disorder is now known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder & there are many distinct differences between Bipolar & BPD.

I am not going to list the symptoms of both conditions, but once again, people need to do their research.

Obviously you completely mis-understand Bipolar. This kind of ignorant attitude causes problems for those of us who genuinely suffer from this illness.

I suggest you spend time researching this mental condition before you post ridiculous comments.

Good lord. People still are ignorant aren't they. Yeah, depressed people just don't apply themselves enough and everyone gets sad but most don't have to go moaning to the Doctor do they etc...!!

This is the 21st century and it is so sad that attitudes and opinions like this still exist. The person who posted the comment never has had to battle a mental illness as it is unimaginable how hard it can be- just hope karma isn't real and it doesn't happen to you!

n.b. Borderline is also known as Emotional Regulation Disorder or even long term PTSD!
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!

As someone who works in the field, I have plenty of research, and you are very very wrong. The 2 symptoms that you have to have are the ones indicated abopve. The ICD10 may include many more as does the DSM4 but these are the requisites.
As for BPD, it has always been known as EUPD (BPD is the DSM coding used in USA and Australaia, but has become used here due to the high media coverage), and the presentation of afective instability is often misinterpreted as BPD, normally rapid-cycling This is the case on many many presentations to the mental health services...........'people need to do their research', and not speak from blind theories.
  • You may work in the field, however, I actually have Bipolar Diagnosis & emotionally unstable personality traits. So I would rank myself more qualified.

Are you directing your post at me? I am baffled by the point your making.

I would agree that on your own illness you probably are, but not on diagnosis and coding requisites. That was what you were arguing against.

I do get what your saying, however, if you join a Bipolar forum, you will get more of a feel for how complex this illness is.

Anyway, I hope the Ops friend gets the help & support they need.
