If your insurer has to pay out to a third party, but find that they can void your policy for any reason, then although the third party is unaffected, you as holder of the voided policy will have to repay the insurer all their outlay to the third party.
I am unsure about this, can you substantiate it?I am not a cat (But my friend is)0 -
don't forget to tell them it's for information only!!
i just struggle to understand why people do report accidents that aren't going through the insurance, if they knocked their wing mirror off when driving into the garage but replaced it with one from the scrap yard, would that get reported?.
I might go shop lifting at lunch, then once the goods are tucked away in the safety of my car i'll go back in to the shop and inform security of my actions... just for information though; in case i ever get caught shop lifting at another shop and the security guard who knew nothing about my existing un-reported offence is working there0 -
I put a scratch in mine getting the roof box off, as an accident do I need to report it?
Could you imagine the rise in premium if I clip door mirrors with my wife's car on the drive. Both of having to declare it for 5 years, even if I don't even break the glass!0 -
if you were a law abiding citizen you would do! ....apparently.0

You are bound by your policy conditions to do so.
(If you risk it, how do you know that at sometime in future this will come back to bite you - the third party may report the incident for info only, thereby getting your details put on the CUE database for your insurer to see!)
(Your scenario regarding self inflicted damage with no-one else involved isn't what is being discussed here)0 -

As Quentin says there is a world of difference between an accident with a 3rd party where they have 6 years to claim and you have NO control over their actions and minor damage which could be construed as part of normal wear & tear e.g. stone chips.0 -
if your neighbour reverses into your car and offers to fix it cash instead of going through their insurance and then tell their insurance... then your main problem isn't that they've told their insurance but that you've got a complete crayon eater living next door to you who is allowed to drive.
The policy condition is there to incriminate yourself and increase your premium.0 -

A third party neighbour may well be happy to pay for a repair rather than let the incident go through insurance to retain his NCD.
He could/should still inform his insurer of the incident:
1) To cover any possibility that in future you come back to him with a further claim (eg more damage come to light during the repair) which he would want the insurer to deal with.
2) Because he is unwilling to breach his policy conditions and face this coming back to bite him in the near or distant future0 -
Did the second person give you their insurance/ address details? or did they offer to pay you direct?0
