Windows 7 Problem regarding IP configuration

I've been having some problems getting online. When I troubleshoot I get a message saying that I "do not have a valid ip configuration".
Is there a way to fix this? I have no idea what my ip address is. I don't use wireless and am always plugged into an ethernet cable. No other computer users in the house.
I can still get online eventually but it is quite annoying that I still keep getting that message. Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks

Have you run Network Diagnostics?604!0

give your router a reboot. if it's anything like mine it'll drop it's connection if and when it pleases.0

When I installed Windows 7 it kept losing network connectivity for no obvious reason. My ISP said that there was a known bug in the OS that can cause this to happen when using DHCP. I thought they were talking nonsense, but sure enough setting a static IP address on that OS fixed the problem.
There's a quick guide on changing static IPs in Win7 here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5837177_assign-ip-address-windows-7.html
You may also need to tell your router to associate the MAC address of your network card with the local IP address it doesn't assign that IP to a different machine on your network or try to give the affected machine an IP via DHCP...0 -
hmmm intresting thread
Try this
Click start and in the search box type cmd.exe or cmd then select it
I will open something like this picture
Then type the following
Ipconfig/all
it will show all the ip connections and adpaters to your machine
If you have ip4 and 6 enabled then your router is fine and it will show your Ip usally something like 192.168.1.1 ect if the ip is missing then type the following
Ipconfig/renew or netconfig
then run windows dianostics if no luck to reslove and check if your router is assigned to a better channel for wireless like this picture and check if your ip address is assigned automatically by your isp (internet service provider)
Hope that helps

Thanks for all your replies.
I'm afraid I don't know much about computers. I don't know what a router or network diagnostics is :embarasse
Flexrider, I did what you said but couldn't make head nor tail of the page showing the ip connections!0 -
In your Windows, Start button ---> search box just type in Network Diagnostics. That should then allow you to select 'identify and repair network roblems'604!0
