2GB SD Card can only take 1GB data

I have just bought a Viking 2gb sd card from Amazon which will only take 1gb of data.

The disk properties on XP are showing:

Type Removable Disk
File System FAT
Used Space 986MB
Free Space 976MB
Capacity 1.91GB

...but when I try to add any data to this it will not let me although I can delete then add providing it does not exceed 1gb.

Any ideas?

Have you tried formatting the card?

What are you using the card in??

I would also email amazon to advise them of the problem.

Some cards I've used have a "secure" area, which is like a separate partition which is password protected - have you checked this is not the case?

I am going to use the card in a dab radio that can play MP3 via the card.It will only let me load IGB of MP3's!

I have contacted Amazon who advised me to contact Viking or return the card to them. As the card is showing 2gb on the properties I thought it might be an easy problem to sort out.

What's the best way to format the card?

Erm... no idea really... depends on the card. Did it mention anything in the instructions?

can you view it once it's in the card reader using the windows logical disk manager, taht should show all partitions and allow formatting, right click on "My Computer" and choose 'Manage' then see if it's in teh storage section
  • Maybe you can only have a 1gb limit on folders, just a suggestion.

See if you can put 2 folders of files with 1gb in each.

I have one that will only show half the photos on my 1 gb card even though they are there, I have had to buy a newer one. Can you try in a friends PC?

    Hi OP,

As well as other things I'm an embedded developer who uses SD/MMC cards following the Sandisk SDIO standard and programming the cards via SPI.

This 1GB limitation is due to your reader. There's nothing wrong with the card. The larger capacities have problems with most readers. Trouble is that you don't know which ones work and which ones don't until you use them.

Welcome to the world of Chinese companies knocking out firmware without following standards which are clearly documented. Also, some cards don't follow the standards precisely either.

Do you have a laptop? Take it and the card to somewhere like Jessops and try out their readers one by one.

    You are correct!

I bought this reader with the card and have just read the first Customer Review:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/ByteStor-USB-Multi-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000AYVIHK

Unable to read/write Sony MS Pro Duo cards over 1GB. Amazon repleaced unit but still the same problem. Returned for a refund and still looking for a suitable card reader...

Next time I will read reviews before I order!

    Hi ts_aly

Yes, it was weird being able to view the photos from the card in the camera but not on the reader, using a Typhoon 6 in 1 card reader 31034 Anubis with the laptop while away. Once home put the card into the built in reader on my desktop and it read the whole card immediately.

Then got a 2gb card off ebay which came with a "free" reader a tiny apply shaped one just for the sd, and it reads them both a treat.
