I am amazed at how banks DON'T want my money

Options
I don't want much. I just need a seperate basic bank account from my main ones at Santander (yes I know, people hate them - BUT they have been the best of the bunch this time!).

* I am happy to do everything online, no statements or anything.
* I don't want an overdraft, chequebook or anything.
* I will have one incoming payment per month from an Irish based company account that I will keep 40% in it for my tax payments and send the rest to my current account. No DD's to default, no SO's to default.

But you know why HSBC and NatWest rejected me.... because I did not want to move all my accounts to them!

I take it having my money and being able to invest it is not good enough for them. HSBC even said they would not even open a SAVINGS account for me if I did not use their switching program!

For a basic account try Barclays or Co-op - Just insist that you only want to open a Basic account "For Personal Reasons" and dont get drawn into conversations about your other affairs.

Nat West do a First Reserve account which is technically a savings account but comes with a Visa Debit card and can be managed (and importantly) applied for online.
  • I have had a really in depth thought about it (while I was burning myself in a scalding hot bath - another story for another day) and have decided to just pay it into my Santander current account. I can then use e-banking to send 40% or so to an old ISA I have tucked away (and empty but for £40) with the Halifax and just transfer it our in April when the taxman wants his cut.

The rest can then be paid to my Debt Management Plan company as extra for my creditors.

Aha! You didn't mention that in your opening post, did you?

There's no requirement with Natwest to use it as your main account.

Agree, just a minor important fact missed out there.

Not sure if this would be something that may be flagged up by creditors and may cause issues, if they suddenly believe you can afford more.
  • I did not mention it because I never got to the point of even filling in an application form. I did not mention it to them either.

All I did was walk into the branch and enquire about opening an account and whether there were any charges attracted for processing Euro currency funds coming in from Ireland. In both HSBC and NatWest in Havant they flat refused to even start the application process.

Have you got a UK residential address? are you on the voters role? have you any unpaid debts? are you bankrupted? are you living overseas so so many questions, dont tarnish banks without giving the full story and plus, your accountants crap if your paying 40% tax self employed
  • GiraffeMan,

I never got to the application stage. The in-branch staff refused to even accept an application because I did not want to switch accounts. Therefore none of the questions you ask were even discussed, as mentioned subsequently above.

I am not saying that I am going to be paying 40% tax self-employed. Its called a buffer which will prevent me landing a large tax bill and will give me a little "bonus" once the tax is sorted out.

Its good to see though, that you have only read the first post before asking the questions that have already been answered. I don't think I will bother in future.
