These tools are legal technically. But if you use them knowing you have a illegal copy of XP then it's illegal.
These tools are generated on the understanding that microsofts scans do have some false results, especially early on. i.e. you know your software is the real thing as you have the proper book, serial and cd and bought it from a reputable retailer. So the scan telling you it isn't, is obviously wrong, so instead of contacting microsoft, you use the software to get your updates

You don't need a disk for the Microsoft amnesty - they have a lot off leeway and are trying to get the message out there to stop people buying from the pirates/thieves. If you have any kind of evidence you bought the PC complete then the call will almost certainly get you a key.
Then buy Ghost or similar and get a full backup done!0 -
