Cheaper Gas & Elec just doesn't work

OK I switched to First Utility some time ago at the promise of cheaper bills, well a year os so on the bills have been all over the place, I managed to get some smart meters fitted 6 months ago, 1 of them is still not working!
They are lovely on the phone but absolutely useless with their billing.
So I am looking to switch as it's hard to have such irregular bills.

So I looked on energy helpline and it comes up with Scottish power, now can someone tell me if I am doing this wrong but it doesn't seem to add up?
Take my last bill just the gas
31 days 1357.697 kWh
Standing charge =67.0p per day £20.77
2.989p per kWh £ 40.58
Total 61.35
Scottish power is this 6.480 p for the first 670 kWh per quarter, =43.416
and 2.756 p thereafter = 18.95
Total 62.366
So the gas is £1 more expensive, I won't post all the electric but thats £2 cheaper so basically it's the SAME! yet the comaprison says it could save £250..
Now there is an extra incentive that First Utility gives a loyalty bonus of £105 over the year, so that easily makes it cheaper.

Now I remember talking to a rep once that said basically all the prices work out the same, it's just confusing tariff's and figures to try and get customers. You could say it would be worth switching to get £40 cash back or something but I dunno I can't seem to find a cheaper alternative anywhere.
but with no standing charge.
Why can't there just be one supplier with a simple cheap price!

Yep, I cam to the same conclusion. If you get your usage and then check the actual price charged by Kw/h and compare the prices charged by Kw/h, it doesn't add up.

But then these comparison sites make their money/commission by getting people to switch suppliers. So, the more people switch, the more money they make.

Your miles out with your calculations. The high rate is for the 1st 670 per quarter, did it not occur to you that for the next 2 months in the quarter you only pay 2.7p for everything you use...
comparing on a 31 day usage is increddibly inaccurate.
compare with what you use in a year.

To put it more plainly; at that particular threshold, you're going to be charged 7.34kwh per day of your bill at tier 1. Once you've calculated 7.34 x days, minus that figure from your total kwh and calculate the remaining at tier 2.

Using a 31 day bill can still give you an accurate comparison for that particular bill, as long as the calculations are correct.
