How to fit slats to bed correctly?

Okay, this is probably a really stupid question, but which way up should I fit the slats on a bed? We have today taken delivery of new bunk beds for our girls, but the instructions are minimal to say the least!!! The slats are held together by some kind of thick, strong, black stringy-looking material (very descriptive aren't I?!) but I don't know whether they should go underneath or on top when we fit the slats. I'm thinking underneath to balance the weight, but I'm not really very sure and I don't want to get it wrong.
Can somebody please help me with this?

I believe you are referring to the tapes that some manufacturers use to create like a rope ladder effect with the slats so they are spaced correctly, Ikea use the same things on their beds, I would say it does not matter which way up you put them.Signature No Longer acceptable -

If it is an Ikea one, it will matter, because there should be some little dowels that go into the frame. You place the slats with the tape downwards, and hook them over the dowels to secure.0

Thanks for the advice everyone - it isn't an Ikea bed, but there are a few screws supplied to attach the slats to the bed. Might get a few more from the toolbox and make sure it's really secure.0

I had such a bed when I was 14, the slats were unsecured. A friend of mine who was a hit with the ladies came round one evening with 3 hot girls in tow. They all came into my room and sat on the bed, shortly before they all disappeared down the back of it0
