Quicky re partial refunds

Sold an item, slight problem with it, but buyer willing to keep it in return for partial refund. THis has all been agreed through ebay messages.
I assume I just go ahead and issue partial refund through paypal. I assume they will then be unable to open a SNAD or similar? is that right.
