I burned the live cd, and it runs fine on my spare pc, so I'm going to have a look at kubuntu and then go ahead with the proper installation of ubuntu or kubuntu on that pc.

My spare pc already has multiple NTFS partitions, so I'll now clear a couple of the partitions, recreate one of them as Ext3 for ubuntu and one as a FAT32 for sharing between Windows and ubuntu, then install ubuntu dual booting with XP.

Many thanks again for all your help and advice.

    Hi acc

It sounds like you're clued up and good to go.

    Thanks, bat999.

I've just started downloading kubuntu, and the estimated download time is 50 minutes!

It looks as if I'll have to buy a bigger hard drive to get the space to create a couple of Ext3 and FAT32 partitions, and then I'll need to install Zonealarm, Ad-Aware, Foxit, Nero, a media player, etc in addition to the applications already on the ubuntu cd.

I should then have a complete non-Microsoft alternative to the Windows based system!

    Hi acc

    no, no, no :D
No need for ZoneAlarm, Adaware, Foxit, media player etc.
These are already taken care of by Ubuntu.

If you need any extra stuff such as RealPlayer, Opera, Limewire, GoogleEarth etc then Linux versions are downloadable for free.
