Things to do in Weymouth

Myself and the OH are going to Weymouth for a few days in August and wondered what there is to do.

We are staying in a B&B close to the beach and the sealife centre, OH has free entry tickets to sealife (very mse!:money:) through his work so will probably go there one day.

I'm not too bothered about everything we do being super MSE but would like suggestions of places to visit/resturants to eat etc.

We are staying at the Seaham hotel (http://www.theseahamweymouth.co.uk/) if anyone has been there and knows what it's like and would like to let me know that would be great.

  • There are loads of things to do in and around Weymouth, it just depends on what sort of things you like doing. Im assuming your not taking any children? When are you going? The carnival is in August, which is always very busy but it's good if you've never been before (17th) and most monday nights there are firework displays on the beach.
There are some lovely walks, excellent pubs and some nice food places too. Will you be taking a car or going by public transport?

Definitely watch the firework display. They set the fireworks off from a boat out at sea (if I remember correctly!); it's very romantic cuddling up on the beach and watching it :)

There's a sea life centre that's not bad.

I remember visiting another 'beach' where we had to walk up a bit of a hill and it was very windy. You couldn't go near and definitely not in the water (it was very, very rough) but that was quite a nice spot too. I think it's only one of two 'beaches' in Weymouth...

Otherwise I can't remember, I went quite a few years ago now.
  • Fireworks sound good. We will be going in the car and will be there from 11th to 15th which I think is a monday so can catch the fireworks.

  • The other beach in Weymouth is possibly Bowleaze cove, a nice spot but in August will be filled with kids as its right in line of the holiday parks. As you have car I would definately recommend a trip to lulworth cove and durdle door- its not too far and is lovely, you can walk from lulworth to durdle, its up a hill but its not too much, there are a few nice pubs in lulworth too for lunch. The smugglers inn at osmington (right next to osmington bay) is in a lovely spot and does very nice food, its about 10 minutes from centre of weymouth.
Also there is a restaurant on the seafront, its called Enzos and I love the food there, nice italian, more upmarket than some of the touristy places and not too expensive really. Near there is Rossis ice cream shop, definately the best ice cream in weymouth, has been there for years and is very popular.
There are some nice places to eat along the harbour, its a nice walk around there too and you can walk to the nothe gardens and hill fort- some lovely views from there across weymouth. You can go on little boat trips from the harbour too, they do tours out to portland or lulworth.
If you are into going out at night the night life in weymouth is very good as all the bars and clubs are so close to each other, people walk from one to the other rather than staying in the same place all night, can get quite rowdy in the town centre late at weekends though, not like proper trouble, just noisy and annoying! The pubs along the harbour and the seafront are nice- there is a place called the nook which does very nice cocktails (not cheap mind!) and is nice as looks out over the bay. There are loads of things to do, you shouldnt be bored. I moved away last year and now after writing all this im feeling a little sad! Can't comment on the b&b and i dont know it, sorry. Have a good time though!

Thanks Cheryelizabeth, will definatley do some of the things you suggested. Cocktails sounds good, I don't drink a lot so wouldn't be too expensive for me, OH on the other hand can drink like a fish!

Sandworld, Sealife centre, tank museum, fleet air museum (although quite far from weymouth, around 30 miles i think, but worth it), loads of nice bars/restaurants and also if you like fish and chips you HAVE to visit Daniels. They have a website if you google it. There's portland aswell which is nice to walk around, amazing views etc.
This thread has me so pumped, I headbutted my dog and we both screamed.

I would agree with Portland being worth a visit, some stunning scenery, you can climb some the rocks or if your feeling fit you can go up the lighthouse. There is a market there on Tuesdays.
We did a boat trip last year and we all enjoyed it, we got it from by the ferry port/tourist information centre.
We have always eaten at Brewers Fayre which is by the Sealife centre and always had good food and service. Or there is cafelicous ( or something like that lol) in the main town.
Lulworth is lovely with a nice beach in a semi circle sort of shape, if you climb the big hill by the car park I would imagine you would great some great views.
You also have monkey world ( as seen on tv) which is somewhere i would like to go but despite having a caravan in Weymouth for the last 11 years or so have never made it :(

"there is a place called the nook which does very nice cocktails (not cheap mind!) and is nice as looks out over the bay"

I can second this, I stayed in Weymouth last Monday with my daughter and we went into The Nook for pre-dinner cocktails, ended up staying all evening as we had a window seat with a perfect view for the fireworks (get there early to grab the best table). Food was good too, not cheap but we decided to splash out as a birthday treat. The cocktails are wonderful!
I can also recommend Monkey World which we visited en route going home, we spent a few hours there but if you had kids you could stay all day as there's plenty for them to do. I noticed lots of families taking in picnics, plenty of picnic areas too. HTH.
  • Just incase anyone is interested the Seaham was the most amazing place I have ever stayed. Immaculatly clean, comfy, breakfast was out of this world, loads of yummy home made jams (I ate so much toast just to try them all)

Would definatly reccomend the place and will go back there again. 10/10!
