  • Lynzpower, I think you have hit the nail on the head there - make sure you have everything you need for complete meals, my problem is I always seem to need to pop to the shop for something I forgot, and always end up impulse buying a couple of other things!! my new years resolution is to meal plan every week and write a shopping list and stick to it!

Lynzpower (and sgx.saint for that matter!) - what do you get for £20-25/week - a lot of veg and basics or do you have a knack?!

Well, we spend £60 at the start of the month and we normally shop at either Iceland, Lidl or Tesco.

We vary what we get, but pasta makes a common appearance as you can make lots of it from virtually nothing, and very cheap ingrediants.

At Lidl, where I have started shopping recently, there are some brilliant things on offer. I got a whole chicken, very large as well for £1.90! :)

After the £60 shop, we do a £20 topup shop mid month. This is basics like, milk, bread, eggs etc.

To be honest, we should really spend a little more each month, perhaps £20 more to bring our total to £100. As we do tend to run short.

Mind you I have just found a thread on the Old Moneysaving forum about 50p meals. So, I have some reading to do! :D

Food starts to get a little bland when you drop below a certain level of cost. When I was in Turkey, I ate pasta most days, and only sometimes with a sauce. Very cheap, but it was like eating card.

It's a matter of striking a balance between extreme low cost and good taste. Try your local Chinese food supermarket when you can; very cheap noodles, which go well with lots of things. You can buy in bulk at 10p a pack, if I remember right.
