Switching suppliers - always problematic?

Or are we just unlucky?

We moved into a new build house in January. The developers had signed the house up with EDF to supply both gas and electricity. We didn't want to be with EDF so set about switching to the utility companies who'd supplied us at our old house - British Gas and NPower.

Switching the gas supply to BG was pretty straightforward and happened in March, although it dragged on a little as EDF were overbilling us due to the fact they used an estimated reading for the final bill rather than the actual closing reading which we gave to BG, which they say they passed onto EDF 3 times. We received a revised closing bill from EDF in May so that finally settled that.

Electricity wasn't so simple as there were issues with the meter registration which were dragging on and on and we'd get different stories from NPower and EDF as to whose responsibility it was to sort the issue before the supply could switch. In the end we were getting nowhere so agreed with NPower at the end of March that we'd cancel switching to them.

British Gas's customer service during the farce with EDF impressed us so we decided to switch to them for our electricity too. Six weeks later, in May, the switch took place.

Finally we were all sorted. Until an email came through late last night from British Gas saying that they're sorry to be losing us as an electricity customer.
After calling BG this morning it seems that from the 3rd July our switch to Eon for electricity will be complete  even though we've never considered Eon, haven't spoken to a rep, haven't received any literature, haven't even been on their website!
It's now being investigated...
