Cost of new combi boiler installation

Options
Hello,
I have just moved into a new 3 bed flat and have been informed that the combi boiler should be replaced. It is around 12 years old at least, and not in particularly good condition. I have received quotes varying from around £1,400 up to around £3,000. What sort of costs should I realistically expect to pay for a the installation? Thanks.

I had my old boiler replaced last August, in the same location it was approx £1600 inc VAT, while what I went for was extending the pipework and electrics from the bathroom up into the loft and it came in at £2000 inc VAT. This was for a Worcester Greenstar 30CDi, installed by a Worcester approved installer so came with a five years manufacturer's warranty (instead of the usual two years). This is in Manchester.

Out of interest, who has told you it needs replacing? What is the boiler you have? A boiler serviced regularly should see in a much longer life than 12 years. It'll take a long time for a new boiler to pay for itself through efficiency savings.

Thank you for your reply. We had a boiler / gas / pipe inspection by British Gas and apparently because the boiler (a Saunier Duval) was put in so long ago, there are various adjustments that need to be made to it to bring it up to modern safety requirements, plus the boiler itself has clearly taken a bit of a battering by tenants who have occupied the property prior to us. This is in London so no doubt that'll stick a few more pounds on the prices I'm being quoted....on the positive side as the boiler was in a rented flat, it used to have annual safewty checks and those always seemed to be fine.

Search these forums for peoples experiences with British Gas. Fundamentally BG consider most boilers over 12/15 years of age "past it" and "difficult to get the parts" - and they pay their engineers commission if they provide a successful sales lead for boiler replacement. Reality is get a local independent and you will probably find its fine and has many more years of life in it - BG are very likely trying to scare you into buying a new one.

We've been quoted £5k to install a Worcester 37CDi boiler, 2 heated towel rails, cap unwanted/existing piped ,gas pipe & cold/hot water to the other side of the cottage & 7 new radiators. Sadly that does not include the dreaded VAT!

Compared to our quote the £3k you've had quoted seems a bit excessive.

Yes, get it checked by someone else in case it is fine. For your information I will pay about £2700 for a Worcester Bosch 30CDI, including moving the gas point, removing the old gas point, boiler and how water tank, and removing the plinth beneath the old boiler. A builder is doing this as I need project management for other work, but a one man band plumber should be able to do it for less as he/she will have less overheads ie. no project manager, and no secretary. This is in East Hants.
