Automatic backups - 2GB Free - My Lifesaver

Hi guys,

A lot of you will already know about this but for those that don't.....

Dropbox gives you a free 2GB account where all your files will be automatically synced & saved online (in your protected account) for future retrieval on any computer.

How it works:
  1. Sign up for an account.
  2. Install the tiny piece of software which runs in the background without further intervention from you.
  3. Any files you save in a special folder called (unsurprisingly) your dropbox will be automatically saved to your online account.
  4. You can now access your files from any computer anywhere in the world & even from your mobile. Your most important documents & files are with you wherever you go.
This service has saved me more times than I care to remember - now I know that if I get a virus that I can't get rid of, I simply reformat my computer, re-install dropbox and my files are automatically downloaded.

Hope this saves a few people from the nightmare of lost work!

Also look at sugarsync which gives you 5GB - and you don't need to put everything into a special folder, you can tell it which of your existing folders are 'special'. And it keeps 5 versions, which has got me out of trouble before. And it will sync those files across Macs, Linux (via WINE) and PC's as well as iPhone, iPad, Android etc too.

For my money, it is like dropbox done properly

    Spideroak is better...

Run on MAC, WIN and Linux (natively!) and soon backup your Iphone and Android on the go.
Keeps unlimited versions (depending on space)
Unlimited devices attached to a single account.
"Zero Knowledge" Encryption storage (SpiderOak don't have ANY access to your data, unlike DropBox) everything is encrypted on your device before being sent to storage.
You can select what folders to backup (whole system or just you documents)
    Laters
