Online overseas transaction charges A & L

Options
I have been charged by Alliance and Leicester /Santander for a purchase I made over the internet in America, they have charged me an overseas transaction fee of £1.25 for something that was £8, this was on my Visa debit card with them.

I assume this is in their terms and so I can't argue the case, but does anyone know of a bank that does not charge for thing like this so I can transfer over to them, or another card that will not have these fees?

It will only be a matter of time until they find a way to charge for paypal transaction :(

Thanks in advance

    Sending money abroad isn't free,

you sent £££ to USA so the charge would be around the 1 or 2 £ stage, so it sounds about right. (but if ya un-sure check santanders site for charges)

you think thats bad? you should see paypal fees for sending money internationally ..... (its ridiculous)

Ignore the above, Santander Debit Cards are dire for using abroad, most debit cards cover costs by a 2.75% load to the Fx rate, Santander have a 2.75% Fx Load + a £1.25 fee per transaction.

Check the below for cheapest credit & debit cards for using abroad.

Thanks for the advice. The annoying thing is that they didn't used to charge for this and I am not even abroad, its an online transaction.

The payment is occuring abroad, doesn't matter if you're physically there or not. :)

    :rotfl:

It's an online transaction on a foreign website, in a foreign transaction. It's exactly the same as if you had used your card in a shop in the US.

You are putting yourself open to risk of fraud and other such nastiness by using a debit card online, even more so by purchasing from foreign websites.

I would be inclined to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and apply for the Santander Zero credit card or the Halifax Clarity Card in order to avoid FOREX fees and protect yourself from the risk of fraud etc.
  • Nationwide don't charge I believe
    Same with metro bank
