i think the issue is that we have a family of 5 were only one adult works, and thats only 22.5 hours. There will usually be a short-fall especialliy if benefits are being cut.

    Have you checked entitledto etc?

Believe it or not you don't need to get CB to get CTC.

With due-respect my first comment is more important than the entitled-to link.

Hello all. Firstly a big "Thank you" to all who posted replies it's very much appreciated!

A couple of you say that the qualifying threshold for the NHS exemption certificate has never been cut but we have been issued one for the last 2 years and our household income hasn't changed. If anything it has gone down. When I recently telephoned the Tax Credits helpline they informed me that the Government changed the threshold therefore we no longer qualify.

They were talking rubbish. The link I quoted is from the tax credits manual, which TCO staff use to do their job, shows the rates since tax credits started and it's never been cut. You may have qualified via another route in the past eg JSA/ESA? Or did you ever give them a lower estimate?

Anyway - things to look into are do you make pension contributions or gift aid - these can reduce your income for tax credits purposes. so make sure you take these into account when declaring your income (google TC825).

It could even be worthwhile making extra pension contributions (eg if your OH's employer has an AVC scheme) to reduce your income under the threshold. Eg if your OH contributed £500, it would cost £400 after tax relief, and you'd get £205 extra in tax credits, and you'd be under the threshold so you'd get the certificates for a bit under £200, plus of course the extra pension.
