Comet 5 year guarantee on new tv

We've just bought a new tv from Comet, we got a good deal for the tv and we're very happy with it. We did our research and it has excellent reviews but to be on the safe side we opted for the 5 year guarantee. This was an additional £129 but we had the option to pay over 4 direct debits spread over a year.
However... I've just heard the news about Comet and now I'm thinking that unless they are bought out, this 'guarantee' isn't going to be worth the paper it's written on. Is this correct?
We haven't paid the first payment yet, it's due in a few days. Should we ring them and cancel? We've just moved into a new house, so we can do without the extra expense if we are not going to get anything for our money!!

My money would be on John Lewis and their customer service is a notch above the rest anyway.
I'd generally agree, and I do usually buy big ticket items there if possible, but I was a bit disappointed that I waited in all day yesterday for a courier that JL.com had arranged to collect a return and they never turned up, I had no call to say they weren't coming, and the message that I left at JL.com (while they were still open) wasn't returned.0 -

Surely the extended warranty isn't with Comet though? As long as they pass your payment on to the warranty company then it's them you need to worry about being around for the next 5 years.0 -
Wouldn't any policy be underwritten by an insurance company ?“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0

Most retailer extended warranties tend to be underwritten by domestic & general. Personally I prefer manufacturer warranties myself.0

This being the important bit about insurance backed warranties. As long as they pass your payment on to the warranty company then it's them you need to worry about being around for the next 5 years.
I would have thought that if the warranty was with the retailer and that retailer folded, the warranty itself would have been worthless, but provided it was paid for with a credit card, then you should in theory be okay.0 -
Thanks for all of your replies so far. We apparently have 45 days after purchase to cancel this, so I'm not too worried yet.
The agreement does mention Comet quite a lot but it also says TWG Services Ltd for & on behalf of The Warranty Group Services (Isle of Man) Limited. Provider of the Comet ExtraCare plan.
I am not sure whether that is good or bad.
For those of you that are saying buy the TV elsewhere, we are actually really happy with the deal we got. Trust me, we've been looking around for quite a long time! So it's just the guarantee that is seeming like not such a great deal. We’ve had to remove your signature.
