Itme full price in stores, but half price online? Is this legal?

I am going to an event on Thursday and need a hat, so I got one in my local Accessorize, for £32, which was a bit pricey but needs must.
I looked online tonight just to see what other stock they might have cos our store is small, and it is only £16 online.
Is this legal? Or can I go back to the store and ask for a discount to the online price? Online it is discounted to £16 from £32, so surely it should also be on sale in store?
Sadly it is out of stock online and I also do not have time to order it and have it delivered for Thursday.
I am a SAHM so money is tight and I cannot afford £16 I didn;t need to spend. This was the cheapest hat I could find anyway. (It has to be a formal hat, not a trendy one)

Yeah, it's perfectly legal.
Many retailers run their online businesses separate from their high street stores.
Online prices are often cheaper as the overheads are lower.0 -
Yes, online prices can be different to instore prices.
But you can't buy online at £16... they have no stock online.0
