For me, this is not a race to the bottom. I have no desire to flog a manual tin can around trying to wring the best possible mpg from the underpowered engine.

I know the concept does not compute for you but I am looking for a probable 4 x 4 which does not hold its value very well and which has good reliability. Both the cars mentioned do that in spades.

For once I wasn't actually punting the ecobox thing, was a bit drunk at the time  so perhaps didn't make myself clear.

With the kind of conditions you have (low mileage, fuel/insurance/etc not an issue) I'd be looking at nutty older things like Range Rovers, 7 series, S class, etc (the latter being big petrols of course)

You don't REALLY need 4 wheel drive, so use the fact you can afford to run such things to get something really mental yet with a bit of luxury as well. Buy a good one for not a lot of money and you'll not need to worry too much about the possibility of an epic money pit.

<splutter> so a RR isn't likely to be an epic money-pit isn't it? :rotfl:

If you buy at the right price and sell it before it's totally knackered, no :rotfl:

Please note you need a fair dose of mental to be a bargeist :rotfl:

The prices on there are ridiculous. Way OTT, not even close to fair market.

As for 4x4, I reckon I might need / benefit from one. Where I live is amongst peaks and troughs with snow the last few years making the roads very bad in places. Some roads unadopted as well.

Given the thread was started in 2008 some of the prices might be a bit out ;)

I still doubt you need 4x4 - winter tyres and proper driving style will see you out of the vast majority of weather related trouble unless you actually stay half way up a mountain in which case I wonder why you're having to go to work in the first place ;)

Let's be realistic. I don't know anyone who has winter tyres or extra wheels they take on and off and I'm not in the business of starting to do that myself. We don't live in Siberia you know.

In any case, the sure footedness of 4x4 is not only for the few weeks we have snow but also for rain, gravel/soil/plant matter etc. on roads all year round.

The prices I checked were new ones, both for the Murano / RX and others and they want 10k for a 6/7k car. Back to Autotrader.
