Hi Grade Notebook Computer M760S

Options
Hi,

My crappy laptop is driving me up the wall. It's a Hi-Grade Notebook Computer M760S, 32-bit OS, avast anti-virus and Comode Firewall are running.

2 days ago i re-installed the Windows Vista Home Premium after the laptop crashed. At 1st all appeared well but for some reason Windows Firewall stopped working today and Windows wouldn't allow me to turn it back on, so i installed Comodo.

Now i'm getting constant error messages popping-up such as: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) has stopped working.
Host Process for windows services stopped working and was closed.
Windows SQM Consolidator has stopped working.
Searched setting has stopped working.
Superfetch has stopped working.
....etc....etc .

I got the same error messages a few days before my laptop eventually crashed. I did the re-installation 2 days ago and thought it was all sorted... but apparently not.

Did an avast scan and all is ok.
Did a malwarebytes scan and all is ok.
Did an avast boot-time scan (don't know what a boot-time scan is but did it anyway) and got the following :

C:\windows\prefetch\AgGIFgAppHistory.gb
C:\windows\Prefetch\AgRobust.db
C:\windows\System32\WDI\...snapshot.etl

The status for the above is: Error: Data Error(cyclic redundancy check)(23)

3rd party firewalls are troublesome, I'd uninstall it, along with one care, and disable defender

run chkdsk on the c drive to rule out a hard disk problem

what type of internet connection have you got? tmobile broadband dongle?

    chkdsk c: /F

did you wipe a factory restore partition when you installed windows?

might be easier if you start again, delete the partitions, and do a full format, then reinstall

    Hi closed,

thanks for the quick response :).

what type of internet connection have you got? tmobile broadband dongle? Currently using Tmobile dongle as having probs with '3' dongle network.

did you wipe a factory restore partition when you installed windows? Hmmm... i'm not sure that i did, i just popped the disk in and let it run . The Hi-grade chappy on the phone didn't say anything about wiping factory restore partitions .

might be easier if you start again, delete the partitions, and do a full format, then reinstall. Will do. Can you give step-by-step instructions please. Your talking to a computer dim-wit here :p

    Thanks as ever...

    Hello hotspur pam

Ignore other replies and do this,

    1. Manually Access Internet

Please be prepared in future to manually connect and disconnect to the T Mobile network i.e. load the program yourself and press the connect button. It is the automatic features that are supposed to save you time that is actually causing some of the problem.

    2. Firewall Program Control

Use your firewall program control to totally kill any actions by T-Mobile Mobile Broadband Manager\AssistantServices.exe. It should read as Assisstant Services in the list of programs if your firewall auto scans for them; ot.herwise you may have to create a new association or rule. This is not difficult and should be straightforward as simply typing T-Mobile Mobile Broadband Manager\AssistantServices.exe or AssistantServices.exe into a new definition, some firewalls will help you find what you are looking for. Mine is purchaed firewall for business so I don't know how you will far with a free one. Create the association in windows firewall and your third party application

    Note

I don't know what this Assistant Services program does but it has absolutely nothing to do with accessing the internet since the T Mobile device does that through a different program in its directory (UI Main). Assistant services always tries to install an application at startup and is therefore looking for an internet connection but there is not one yet since the main app has yet to load). When I realised this application was trying to install something I immediately became extremely suspicious since nothing on my computer is installed unless i explicily allow it.

You also need to do the one other thing which may seem daunting but is not in reality.

    3. Use CCleaner to modify your laptops Startup Configuration

CCleaner is available from file hippo - Go into CCleaner - Select Tools Tabs and then Startup. Find T mobile device and disable it (disable other non essential items too if they are obvious to you). close and restart. Do not rely on the unchecking "Run at Start Up" box when installing the T mobile device anew since it does not work.

CCleaner is best to make sure and for making startup changes (can be done in through control panel or by searching for msconfig in the search bar behind the big round windows button in lower left corner however this causes a selective startup not a modified normal mode startup).

    Things should be fine then

I have a 32bit vista home premium laptop and a 64bit vista ultimate high performance PC so between the two I could figure conclusively figure out the T mobile broadband device has issues. The stupid thing could not crash the high spec machine but was causing problems in the backgound and severe disruption in the laptop.

If you do a brand new reinstall take your time and be patient, it is easy to get very angry and frustrated at computers because in reality we are highly dependent on them nowadays and only techies know what is going on in there behind the scenes "mathematics". PC designs are not as robust as the drama in our heads would lead us to beleive.

If you have to install the dongle to do your windows update for a new install make sure you do the steps above first literally as soon as you installed it but prior to using it. Better still borrow a friends or family members hardline for all those things.

    All the best

THIS IS A VERY OLD POST & IS FOR INFO ONLY

you have already re-installed Vista - I would suggest that one of the first things you should do is check a couple pieces of Hardware.

    1. Run chkdsk C: /r - enter this command into the command prompt, and it shoulld start a hard drive scan on rebooting - if it doesn't try entering the command again. Yjos will repiar bad secors if it can and report at the end if there are any bad sectors.

    2. Run memtest86 to check your RAM - free program from here http://www.memtest86.com/download.html this will tell you if any of yr RAM is faulty
