Games on MS Vista

Hi all, has anyone tried playing games on Vista yet (HL2 etc)? As a beta tester I got a free early copy of the Vista Ultimate retail DVD and am having a few problems with it. None of the games I want to play (mostly from Valve) will run properly on it - they start up and as soon as any action begins the machine crashes and restarts!! Beginning to sound like the bad old days of BSOD, I am beginning to think that Vista is not yet ready for public release as I would have expected (a la XP pro) that a game crash shouldn;t cause a machine crash...
No reliance should be placed on the above, as i don't believe anything i say either...

Hmmm Microsoft informed me that Beta testers would NOT be getting thier usual early Retails... Need to get on to them to get that sorted.. They gave me 2003 server and XP early no problem..... Was it the 30 or 60 day version you got as I know they dont give away full retails...

I think the reason for them doing that was because not all video cards are fully supported under Vista yet (nvidia and ATI only have beta drivers that still only use DX9 technology).

Vista ISNT ready for retail release (probably the reason they said they werent giving out the early retails). I know from forums that the pirate RTM version wont run all games (or some very poorly) as it is missing a load of drivers as it only comes with basic drivers for the systems its being installed on and wont have full support untill its connected to Microsoft update and downloads the final signed drivers from the site in January when these start appearing.

BTW what stage of beta testing were you involved in eg: what was the first build you tested??? How did you get your copy... Download ,post... Its so I know before I go on and pull Microsoft up...

Hi Scooter, have been testing from the Longhorn days. MS contacted me and said anyone who had submitted bug reports would be getting free copy as a download (ref is vista_6000.16386.061101_x86fre_client-LRMCFRE_EN_DVD.iso also called Windows Vista Final English DVD Images) and they then emailed me individual serial number within a week or so. It did not need validation for 30 days without the serial but once i got it was validated immediately?

Yup.... Just checked my Connect account and there it is sitting.... 6GB .. thats a lot more than usuall.... Going to take a while to get this... Thank god I dont have limits on my broadband.... One other thing.... I also got an e-mail on an account I have used my cousins address (Florida).. It looks like I am getting a full retail boxed version from them in February for using the Windows Vista Consumer Assisted Support (Friends and Family) beta program.

    Greetings,

The Windows Product and Consumer Support teams would like to thank you for participating in the Windows Vista Consumer Assisted Support (Friends and Family) beta program.

We're proud to announce that we have finalized our work on this version of Windows. Today, we have announced an extremely important milestone for Microsoft, the RTM (Release To Manufacturing) of Windows Vista. After receiving thousands of pieces of feedback via phone support and Web chat, we've incorporated much of this feedback into improving Windows Vista. Through your dedication and persistence, we're releasing an exceptionally better product. We could not have done this without your help!

Though we are officially announcing the release of Windows Vista today, the new version of Windows will not be available for consumers until late January. Computer manufactures require several months in order to test and prepare a new version of Windows for inclusion on new PC's. This is a normal part of the process for Microsoft and these manufacturers.

We're pleased to announce that we will be sending you one licensed 32-bit retail copy of Windows Vista Ultimate as a thank you for your participation in our program. This complimentary copy of Windows Vista may be installed on a 32-bit or 64-bit capable computer (x86/x64). At this time, we plan to send these out to participants in the February timeframe. We must wait until the product is available for purchase at retail establishments before shipping your copy so please continue to use and enjoy your existing version of Windows Vista until that time. Please take a moment to read the Updated Support Policy section below for important information regarding your support options from this point forward.

Important: It is important that we have your correct mailing address on file with the Connect site in order to receive this complimentary copy. Please verify this address is current and within the United States or Canada. Verification must be completed on or before December 20th, 2006. Changes made to your mailing address after this date may result in your copy of Windows Vista not being mailed or being sent to the wrong address. Microsoft Corporation is not responsible if your complimentary copy of Windows Vista is not delivered for any reason.

To verify that your contact and mailing information are current and correct, please visit the site https://connect.microsoft.com/profile/profile.aspx and logon with the same Microsoft Passport account you used when you originally registered for the program. Do this by Dec. 20th 2006 to ensure we have your updated information prior to shipping.

Again, we thank you and appreciate the time and effort you contributed. Your work greatly helped us in our effort to make Windows Vista the best Windows release ever!

    Sincerely,

Windows Product and Consumer Support Teams

Just have to hope my cousin sends it to me and not use it himself..

Looks like I might be too late for this now.... Will just do the survey and see if they send the key.... If not I will just have to hold on for the boxed version..
