Hi all,
I currently have a WRT54G v2 with DD-WRT v24SP2 with a WRT54GS also running the same firmware being used as a repeater.
Since a recent power cut it seems to have been playing up quite a bit (may be a coincidence) and ping times over wireless are about 30ms+ and pages are very slow to load when browsing. I've tried changing channels from 1, 6, 11 and 12 to be different to neighbour's routers but performance still seems bad. I do have a number of devices in the house on wifi, using mostly G, one is B and a few capable of N.
I've seen some Linksys WRT160N routers cheap in a local shop and someone suggested buying a D-Link DIR-615.
I don't like Netgear at all as I had those prior to Linksys and two different routers that overheated constantly and had to be rebooted nearly daily (tried almost everything to cool them down!)
Also noticed mention of TP-Link routers...
I also ran WirelessMon and after a few moments my router (Linksys) and my neighbour's router (Belkin) showed hundreds of dropouts yet another local router, a DLink, showed a fraction of that number.
Any suggestions or recommendations would be very much appreciated...

Not an expert on wireless by any means, but will offer my observations as your current router and what you are looking at I already have.
Had the same linksys as yours for a few years and changed it when I got 50MB broadband 6 months ago to the DR-615, but I believe that has Virgin's own firmware in it and the features that I wished to use did not work, and there was dropouts.
So I have recently just bought the TP-Link 1043wd 3 antenna wireless N and this is solid and stable.
So to recap
Linksys wrt54 G - Stable and the features worked (stock latest firmware)
Dlink DR-615 (Virgin) - Although an N - link was about 68% and dropping out at times.
TP-Link 1043 - very stable and features worked - used same usb small edimax receiver as Dir -615 did and now getting 83--> 100% link.
Maxes out the 50Mb virgin connection - not tried PC to PC yet though, but solid and more to go. And obviously much faster than the Linksys G.
Have now got the TP-Link 3 antenna adaptor, but still to put that in the PC.0 -
Many thanks JesseJames, that's really helpful
Great that you've been able to compare those three routers, I must admit I only have the 10MB speed with VM and doing speed tests in the browser show the current up/download speeds. I'm just suspicious about the ping times to the router as I sit opposite the router in the living room, only about 2.5 metres from it, direct line of sight and still about 20-30ms ping times but I must admit it does seem quite stable and doesn't often need rebooting. I'll check out those TP-Link routers though as they sound good...

Just to let you know Marty the TP-Link model number I have (from it's internal webpage) is "300M Wireless N Gigabit Router Model No. TL-WR1043N / TL-WR1043ND"
Also, this is the model that also has Gigabit LAN ports.0
