How do i refund the buyer including return postage?

Sorry in advance if this has been asked before.
I am not a big seller on Ebay but recently sold something that the buyer is stating 'Item is not as described'
We are in discussions via ourselves and they haven't opened a dispute or anything.

I received the item back today and now want to refund the customer including what it cost for them to post it back but i am not fully understanding how i go about this? They paid via Paypal.

When i hit the 'issue a refund' will it give me the option to input my own figure? ( i don't want to press it just incase i do something wrong.
I am planning on emailing the buyer to advise how much i am refunding and only on agreement from them will i then issue the refund.

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks.

Try putting in the amount you'd like to refund. It possibly only goes up to the original amount. If that's the case, refund the original amount that way (as it means you'll get your paypal fees back), and then send the return postage amount as a gift payment to their same email address. That way they won't pay to receive either amount.

You sound like a lovely seller by the way too.

    Thanks alfiesmum,
I have never had to refund before and have 100%feedback.
I understand you don't have to refund the postage but i don't want to upset the 'apple cart' so to speak. Just hope it doesn't affect my feedback rating but it has put me off selling on Ebay.
I have also received a 'I did not receive my item' email so when that comes up for a review i will be looking how to do that as never had that situation either.
Again thanks and i will give that a try. x
