MBNA credit card payment query

  • Hi

Thanks for your replies. I will just ensure I pay on receipt of my statement now and not when I get paid. I just do this straight away as near to pay day as possible so that my card is paid. I wish they were just asking for a minimum amount, but I'm afraid the minimum payment is 3 times what it normally is. I have to assume this is because they are saying I've defaulted. Which I have, because I've paid twice in 1 month, and nothing this month. That'll teach me.

MBNA did change their minimum for some customers a couple of months ago.

In any case, the calculation includes as components the amount of interest and any fees. So there probably is a one-off effect, but assuming you are now on a higher interest rate they will never return to what they were.
  • Hi to all who took the time to respond to my query. I thought I'd update you. I've just gone online to make the online payment and it was only asking for the standard minimum monthly payment it always asks for and there is a note that the £12 default charge for late payment has been removed. I imagine they'll still remove the remaining 0% interest for the remainder of the term (till November) but I have only had to pay a third of what I thought I'd have to. I've also learnt that I will pay on receipt of my bill in future and not when I get paid. Thanks again all.

The increase in minimum payment is probably not because of the missed payment. MBNA have recently massively increased the minimum payments they require. Did you not receive any paperwork about this? I got it every month for about 6 months before they made the change.

With MBNA you can pay amounts in addition to any direct debit payment so why not set up a DD for the minimum which means you will never miss a payment. You can then "top up" to what you would normally pay.

I also find it helps to look at the account online on a regular basis so I keep full track of things.

You may be in luck if they have removed the default. I paid one day late a few months ago and rang them to explain - they removed the default repaid the £12 charge and re-instated my interest free so hopefully they will have done the same for you! Good luck!

I think we had an insider on recently who said that operators are no longer able to re-instate 0% deals but instead offer the 9.9% thing as a compromise.

That's not to say that nothing could be done with further struggle.
