I am getting this awful noise coming from my water tank, it sound like somebody is putting a hammer drill through the wall, it lasted only a few seconds. The same thing happened two years ago about the same time of the year. I am just wondering what it could be. My husband thinks we might to get a plumber. Will be grateful for any advice. Thanks

If you get it when or just after you run a tap, it is probably Water Hammer.
Caused by insecure pipework and/or water pressure.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
It sounds like it is a problem with the inlet valve (or ballcock) to the tank.
If you google "water hammer" you will find out more about it.0 -
Sounds like you need one of these

A diaphram washer.
Or if it looks really scaled up then a new valve (half inch part two balllvalve )

Any idea what type of insurance might cover this type of work? I have got insurance for pipes work. Thanks0 -
Hi
Not sure if you would be covered by insurance as it isn't really broken . I mean you don't have a leak or an overflow etc. Its just noisy.
The rubber diaphram gets hard over a period of time so they might argue 'fair wear and tear.'
Always worth a phone call though.
Good luck.

Hubby is so easy going and it says it's Xmas and it will be hard to get a plumber. Can this cause damage if we do not do anything about it now but it is driving me crazy? To scare him off, I told him, the pipe might burst. You reckon a rubber diaphram is all we need to ix this problem. Thanks for your help.0

Hubby has just noticed this happens mainly when he opens the hot water tap. Does this means anything? Thanks0

When you open the hot water tap cold water from the tank pushes the hot water out of the hot tap ..this water has to be replaced by water from the mains supply via the ball and valve which is where the noise could be coming from..A claim from the insurance may mean an increase in premium which may be more than the cost of repair.

"Water hammer can cause pipes to burst if a weakness exists in your internal pipe work, however this occurs infrequently. A weakness can often occur if your pipes are corroded or if they have weak joints. Water hammer can also cause pipes to move if they are not well secured - resulting in fatigue cracks or friction holes."
