My losses are about 1 in a 1000 so I don't believe things are bad at all, it's just that for me Italy accounts for more than their fair share of issues.

I must say that ISF does not get lost, in my experience, and tracking can be followed all the way through to destination, via the Italian website.
For cheaper items not worth it, probably, but many Italians don't mind paying for the signature and reliability of ISF, in my experience, so there is no cost/risk to the seller.
I don't know much about normal Airmail to Italy, only sent a few items, never lost anything.

I sell a fair bit to Italy and just send the stuff normal air mail and never had 1 issue.

The only country I seem to have problems with is China. Sold to Brazil today for the first time, so interesting to see how that one goes.

It seems that some people have more issues than others.
I wonder if there is something that scammers/thieves use to identify possible juicy pickings, like address from ebay invoices, paypal postage etc???

I have no reason to believe that my Italian losses are due to scammers. I have a friend who is married to an Italian and lives near Naples, she always tells people not to send anything at all to her in Italy but instead to wait for her mum or sisters to go and vist and send it with them.

She talks darkly or bribery and corruption although as she has lived there now for many many years she just accepts that that is how it is.
