weird fraud on my credit card - can anyone think why ?

Hi all, hope this is an OK place to ask this. I got a text from MBNA then a letter saying I needed to contact them urgently, which I did. I was told that somebody had called them because they found my credit card on a train, and then shortly after they declined a transaction (for £5.87 to BEACH HOUSE) because of this information. I was completely mystified as at the time the card was found I was on holiday (i.e. I had not been on a train), I checked in my wallet, and the card was still definitely there and in my view had never been left anywhere where it could have been copied/cloned or anything. I don't even use that card anymore. The lady asked for a lot of info about the card including the security number and my security details, and straight after the call I felt alarmed as I suddenly thought "what if it is a double scam - i.e. the letter/text/divulging the info to MBNA", but I rang MBNA back (a phone number from another source than the letter) and got through to the same musak, choices, etc. so was relieved. Now I don't know what to make of it, I don't know whether to be worried or not, or to take any further action. I also can't understand why someone would bother to ring MBNA (who are dead slow at answering, then try and use the card). I'd appreciate any views, very grateful, thanks, Sal x

Well I can't help on this particular issue but I know my dad had a similar issue with MBNA a few years back and had recieved a phonecall from them to check his recent transactions and it turns out someone else had been using his card despite him being in possession of it and he too had no idea when any opportunity for it to be cloned could have possibly happened.

A few months back someone apparently found my natwest debit card too and my account was suspended despite me being in possession of the card the whole time...still a mystery that one

If you don't use it and there is no or little balance, it would be safer to probably just cancel it if at all possible? My debit card was cloned a while back not sure how but I can take a guess as the local supermarket had their tills down so were taking manual card swipes? - Anyway, I got new cards and changed all my passwords, paranoid maybe but maybe it's something that's worth being paranoid about?

DId you give them your PIN?

I'd cancel your card to be safe, sounds like a scam.

Thanks for advice, sorry to be slow to get back - yes took your advice and cancelled it entirely. I also managed to confirm it wasn't a "double scam" if you get my drift - MBNA did genuinely speak to me. I said to them I was happy with the service I had been given, but they should really revise their policy of asking SO much information, as this does seem suspicious. sal xx

ps they could not explain the fact that someone phoned them to say they had "found a card" then tried to use it, cloned cards are quite common, and their thought was that someone could have found a cloned card, handed it in, and then whoever it was handed into tried to use it, or that the details were cloned twice. Either way. scary !
