how do I calculate % increase?

Last year my quarterly bill was £158.55 and this year my quarterly bill is £194.21.

How do I calculate the % increase?

I can sort of work it out by using excel but there must be an easier way than having a column of percentages from 1 to 100% and downward filling until I get matching figures?

I get 22.4%

  • Hi, you calculation is correct. To work out the percentage increase you can do the following calculation. new value - the old vale % old vale x 100

First work out the difference between last quarter and this quarter i.e. £194.21 - £158.55 = £35.66

Then you have to find out what percentage £35.66 is of last quarter's bill so £35.66 divided by £158.55 = 0.2249132

    Multiply this by 100 and you've got your percentage increase - 0.2249132 X 100 = 22.49132

So your increase is just under 22.5 %.

I'm sure there are simpler and quicker ways to do it, but that's how I do it.

    £194.21 minus £158.55 = £35.66.

    £35.66 divided by £158.55 = 0.2249 multiply by 100 = 22.49%

Edit. Posts crossed - great minds etc
