Can someone please tell me if libreoffice is the same as openoffice. When I went on their website, it looks very similar to openoffice but I don't know if there is any differences between the 2 applications.

The Free Software Foundation Recommends LibreOffice Over OpenOffice.org

Unlike OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice is under The Document Foundation and they are committed to keeping LibreOffice under LGPL.

It comes as standard with the latest version of Ubuntu so I have migrated from open office to it as a matter of course.

Took a little bit of getting used to but not much and I have not found anything that I could do in open office that I cannot do in libre office

LO is effectively what OO should have become. Both free, so try LO, if you don't like it, install OO instead.

Thanks guys for all your replies. Sounds like LO is the better option - Martin said that LO took some getting used to, so is LO more complex than OO. What are the major differences? I've seen OO as a friend has it, but I don't want to download an application that may be more awkward to use. Any advise please.

I thought that LO was effectively the newest most popular fork of OO, but in a discussion a few months ago, it was suggested that there isn't any discernible difference between them (and that users of free software don't have the right to an opinion anyway!)

I never found out why one would choose to use LO over OO or vice versa, but it sounds like the differences are idealogical and wouldn't make any difference to the non-contributing user...

The differences are more idealogical - LO is freer (as in liberty, not cost) than OO, so you may see more innovation in the LO fork.
  • The team behind OpenOffice had a big fall-out with the management at Oracle after the latter bought out Sun.

This resulted in them setting up LibreOffice - it's the natural evolution of OOo.

It's a great wee suite; if only they'd get their finger out and develop a ribbon interface.
