How did I make this mistake??

Hi All

Just been getting my monthly accounts in order for my sales for June and gathering all my PayPal statements together.

I’ve discovered a mistake that I hadn’t even picked up on –(note to self….need to check all paypal payment statements more thoroughly!!!!!)

I sold a ladies jumper 2 weeks ago, I had it down for 2nd class standard postage. The buyer didn’t pay for nearly a week but kept sending me messages saying ‘I’ve not forgotten I’ll pay tomorrow’ etc etc…I was nearly at the end of my tether and ready to report her for non-payment and then she paid! Great!!! So I waited for my paypal notification and got the jumper ready and off the same day.

When I’m now processing the information into my sales spreadsheet I’m gutted to discover that I’ve somehow made a mistake because she has only paid the amount that she bid on the jumper and nothing for postage so it has cost me the postage and I have made a loss on my sale. Does the buyer have an option not to pay the postage? Have I set the sale up incorrectly? I still have the listing handy and the postage is on there and the paypal statement says ‘Postage Details: Standard Delivery’ but then no money has come through for it! The buyer lived in Guernsey so all I can think is that she’s tried to choose a different postage option that wasn’t there (even though it is still classed as British Isles postage I think)

Can anyone shed any light on this so I can avoid making this silly mistake again?
Thanks

I had a similar blip with CI postage a few weeks back. Ebay do not recognise CI as coming under UK for postage. CI buyers will not be able to bid on UK only listed items if the preferences are set up correctly to block non UK buyers. However, if you just add UK postage prices but don't have the preferences set to block non UK, then it will allow CI to come through as FOC. In most cases CI and UK are the same price as they do come under the Royal Mail UK post, but it is an anomaly on Ebay as I found out to my cost.

You can also set up not to allow buyers to amend postage costs - this could be the only other possibility of why it was free, but my money is on the first scenario.

Thank you so much for this information!! At least now I know I'm not going mad (altho still slapping myself on the wrist for not checking that the correct amount had been paid in)
I'm a little confused as as far as I was aware I have my preferences set to block non UK buyers (and have had foreign bidders contact me before to ask if I will consider their bids on my items when they have been looking at the UK site). Sorry to be thick but how do I amend this to block CI bidders? I know it seems a bit mean but for now I don't want to risk this happening again.
    Thanks

If you have your preferences set to block non UK buyers (yes we know CI is really part of here as far as postage is concerned) but then it sounds as if you have the option to allow buyers to amend their postage costs themselves?

Alternatively it could be another blip connected with the CI and Ebays inability to work out where it is in relation to Royal Mail postage.

Its in Site Prefs - Payment from buyers - allow buyers to edit payment totals - NO.

There was a glitch a while back that allowed buyers to change postage, it seemed to effect mainly listing which had a collection option as well.
I also had a buyer who could not pay postage, for some reason it was £0.00 and it would not change, even after I sent her an invoice. I was lucky because instead of just paying the cost of the item she paid the postage separately through Paypal (she obviously knew her way round PP).
    She was abroad.
