Scottish Power automatically opted me in to another 12 months

Can anyone help advise please? I signed up to a Scottish Power in 2009 on a fixed deal Online Saver 7. In Nov 2010 (at end of locked in period) they sent me an e-mail to let me know that they were extending the offer until Dec 11 and "click here" to opt-out.

I did nothing and they have now locked me in until Dec 11.

Is this legal or right that they should be able to lock me in because I didn't opt-out? I thought I should have to opt-in, rather than opt-out, especially if they were committing me to a further 12 months.

Any thoughts or advise welcome.

Thanks

    C'mon timsam

    - they said they would extend the agreement unless you click the opt out button
    - you did not click the opt out button as instructed
    - so your [ deemed contract ] agreement was extended as they said they would

Sorry timsam :) It's not just SP, but all utilities / Virgin Media etc, almost all online contracts are the same.

Unfortunately, it's usually in the T&Cs of these fixed term deals that when it ends they may move you onto another fixed term contract unless you object. Your new one is likely to have the same thing written in.

They are obliged to inform you they are doing it and give you a chance to object but that's all they have to do...
