If you want to avoid SP’s cancellation charge you need to let them know you are cancelling and then the new provider must contact them within 15 working days.
I suggest you talk to Npower first. I suspect they won’t contact SP, at the earliest, until your 7 day cooling off period has expired.
I got an exact date from the Coop and didn’t talk to SP until I had one.
Dear Customer
Thank you for choosing Co-operative Energy as your new energy supplier. Switching over will take about
a month to complete, and we’re due to start supplying you on or around 29/07/2011.
Please note that 02/07/2011 is the final day of your "cooling off" period during which time you are
completely free to change your mind about your decision to switch energy suppliers. If we do not hear from
you during this period, we will contact your current suppliers on 02/07/2011 and commence the switchover
process. If the ball had gone in the net it would have been a goal.If my Auntie had been a man she'd have been my Uncle.0 -
The chances are, you won't be charged regardless of whether or not the new supplier contacts them within 15 days. The SP guy told me I could just switch and wouldn't be charged. I think the 15 days is put on the email because these are the rules that they are obliged to adhere to.0

Hi RobStaffs
When you switch to a new supplier, the switch will start going through from the date you apply.
npower will send you a letter letting you know the exact date of when your supply will switch - this date will be around 4 to 6 weeks after you applied.
Don't worry about letting Scottish Power know you're switching, as we will do this for you.
Hope this helps?
Thanks

I sent an email to Scottish Power saying I was rejecting their price rise and was moving suppliers. I stipulated that I wasn't expecting to pay any cancellation fees, and I had a reply confirming they wouldn't be charged. I'm £120 in credit too, so will be expecting a refund of around £100 by the time I get the final bill from them.0
