First credit card, what limit?

Having never had a credit card before, i know very little about them.
However, with the 0% purchase for x month deals kicking about, it could just be what I need.
My question is, what is the likely limit for a first time credit card? Are there any rough calculations or does it vary massively?
My plan is to buy a new motor, however it will be just under 2 months before I physically have the cash. With being on holiday for a couple of weeks, it feels like it would be the perfect time to try and find the car and buy it. Then pay it off in full when I have the cash.

And at the other extreme, £12,500...although it was 6 years ago, so things may have changed now.0

So there is hope then, how long do these things normally take to sort out. If I was to apply this week, would I be likely to have the card next week?
Anyone know of any places that tell you instantly online how much, if any 0% etc...0 -
Tesco will automatically tell you online your credit limit and apr before you confirm you want the card, and whenever i've applied for a card it has usually been around a week before you receive the card and pin.0

Got 2k limit on HSBC card.
If you can save for the car I would, this isn't a good economic climate to be messing around with credit right now.Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.0
