ipad 2 face time question

So, I am new to the ipad. We only just got it at the weekend.
This morning I was testing out facetime and "called" my friend who has an iphone.
I was connecting using only wifi, as the ipad doesn't have a sim in it yet.
I asked my friend what it said when I was calling him, for example did a number come up, did my email address come up... he said he didn't notice, but after we ended the call the history showed my mobile number (but he may have been confused as I called him on my mobile before I facetime him, to let him know what I was doing!)
Could anyone try and clear this up a little for me?!
Thanks

Both have to be on Wifi network.
You can call someone out of the contactlist and tap on facetime.
It should ring as usual, but afaik it should let you know its a facetime call.
If the receiver of the call is not on WIfi, it wont appear at all.0 -
It worked fine, connected and we were talking and could see each other.
I think I have just confused myself and my friend by asking him what happened when I called him, I thought it would be like a phone call with "so and so" showing up on the caller display....
And as it was from ipad to iphone, and because I had also used my mobile phone to call him before hand, that confused me even more!!
I think I have got it now though. If I open the app and try to call him, it will ring him but bring up something to do with facetime, presumably just showing my email address or itunes login, then it goes from there.
Still finding my way around the ipad to be honest.....0
