Painted room smells of cat wee

I recently painted a bedroom with some paint given to me for free. It was a tub of Crown paint that had never been opened but had been stored in a garage for several years. The room I painted now has a faint smell of cat wee. I assume the paint has `gone off` but will the smell ever fade? It has been several weeks but the smell still lingers despite leaving the window wide open for hours each day. Can I do anything to get rid of the smell? I would rather not paint again as I have now laid carpet and put furniture back in the room.

you could try plugins air freshners but the best ive found to overcome this problem is insense sticks burn one or two every day for a week or two the rose ones are tolerable better than the paint - eventually it gets better.

Weve tried many over the years and although I dont use them all the time (no reason) occasionally one of us digs them out - the best brand is spiritual (stronger smell).

Here you go ebay has loads choose rose if you like but all are ok.

Although I found 3 for a pound in a local small pound shop.

  • Thanks very much both of you - they will be a much cheaper fix than buying new paint.

I have no proof that this works but I have been told that wiping the painted surface with diluted mouthwash gets rid of this type of smell.
The air fresheners might overcome it , if not maybe some mouthwash from the Pound Shop might be worth a try?
    Forgotten but not gone.

Try cutting up an onion, and place each half in a saucer and leave either side of the room, the onion will evaporate the smell of the paint, ok, there will be a smell of onion for a day or so, but the cat smell will be gone.

I had a similar problem when I painted the bedroom in my new bungalow. I thought it was the old carpet and underlay so removed them, only the smell was still there. I aired the room and used some Febreze Air Freshener Spray but still room smelt so in the end I just placed a Neutradol gel fresh odour destroyer in the corner of the room. Ok the smell didn't go straight away but it worked say within a week. • Hi, i have recently painted our walls with brand new Crown paint and the room now has the strongest smell of urine. It is really disgusting. I had a look online and it seems this is an ongoing problem with Crown paints although they say it is a problem with 'wall odour'!

Have you resolved your 'cat wee' smell in your house?

I am planning on contacting Crown in the morning to see if they can give me an explanation.
  • No I still have not solved the smell problem. Do not expect much help from Crown - they did not want to know especially as I could not produce the batch number etc from the paint container ( it had been recycled) They have told me to paint the room with alkali resistant sealer and then repaint with emulsion. MAybe you will have more luck if you have this info.

very interesting Watchdog thread linked above.

However there is also an eleven page thread on a forum called diydoctor entitled "This paint stinks!!!!" where loads of other people have had the same problem. The thread does not appear to be live any more so you may need to select the cached version from google. It appears that Crown have in some cases paid for rooms to be redecorated or issued vouchers to cover the cost of materials. Sometimes using the alkali rsistant primer does not work.

I now have the primer and hope to use it in the next couple of weeks, crossing my fingers it works. I will not however be using Crown Paint to redecorate the room.

I will post back to let you know how I get on.

This is an old chestnut with certain Crown paints - this complaint has been around for some years. You won't get much help from Crown because they don't know what to do about it.
I will not however be using Crown Paint to redecorate the room
    is the only practical solution.

    Cheers
