sharedealing firstdirect

I currently use first direct for sharedealing, but note that a lot of people recommend using alliance trust, which also won a prize for 'stocks and shares ISA of the year' last year. However, the charges for first direct seem lower (£11 vs £12.50 and no annual free vs £25 annual fee). What am I missing?

I believe Alliance Trust return some of the trail commision on funds. EDIT: Another thing - I believe Alliance Trust are also one of the few places you can buy the v.cheap Vanguard funds.

Decide what you want to invest in (shares, funds, with or without an ISA wrapper etc) and then have a look at this thread to see which is cheapest.

Depends on how many trades you actually need to make each month. Some of the fund supermarkets complete share transactions for £1.00 - £1.50, but this generally comes with a monthly fee. The usual price is around £10 if you don't have the regular trader account.

Try this site for some advice, it talks of funds, but the majority cover shares too.

Any fund supermarket would require you to open an account with then, but you can transfer existing ISA's accross too, if that proves beneficial.
