Help with central heating conroller

Hi, I wondered if there are any plumbers or electricians who could offer me advice.

I purchased a controller a few months ago off ebay, it is a Grasslin Towerchron which has two settings, QE and QE2. I selected the QE2 method as I have a storage tank rather than a combi boiler and the manual suggested this selection.

I have installed it today to the best of my ability. Obviously I connected the L,E & N feed into the obvious terminals. I was left with one cable which I assume bypasses the thermostat. I connected these to terminals 3 and 4 which appears to be correct according to the installation manual. I was unclear whether I should link a common from the live terminal to terminal 3 as this was suggested in the QE option but not for QE2. However I have tried both ways.

The problem I have now is that nothing is working correctly. The only thing that I am able to do is set the time. No other functions are being recognised on the screen. If I try to programme, the time will not alter and I cannot select a day of the week etc. It is basically unresponsive in every aspect apart from setting the time.

Is this something to do with my installation or is it a faulty product? As I say it was purchased from ebay a few months back and I have only just got around to fitting it. It was unused previously and sold as new.

I would imagine that even if I installed the cable from the thermostat incorrectly, the functions should still work, albeit it wouldn't turn the central heating on when it was supposed to and wouldn't heat the water up, bur surely I would still be able to change the programme time.

I am just wondering whether I should buy a new controller or whether it is my installation which is the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Edit. The product can be found here http://www.heatingcontrolsonline.co.uk/grasslin-towerchron-qe2-programmer-p-663.html

If you disconnect it and run it on battery power, does it then respond to more inputs than the time setting? if so, that would indicate that the installation is incorrect.
Can you do a factory reset on it?
I'd alway go for one of these:

Thanks for your reply. No it still doesn't respond on battery power, so I guess that answers my question, it's a faulty product?

If its faulty send it back and get a programable thermostat like the CM907 for your central heating and a Honeywell programmer for the hot water.
