Oh No a Blackbird Nest Uncovered....

Hiya

I feel so sorry for these little things, I was culling trees in my garden, unknowingly pulled out a massive nest full of three big babies

God knows how but they managed to stay put, we have returned the branch and left it perched on top of the bush it was in the first place.

I've wired it to a branch it was attached to - we're due a storm - and evened asked my hubby if we need to get an umbrella over the top. The parents have already flapped about it but at least they're there.

What if they fall out or the parents don't come back as they're scared?

Just wondered if anyone knows, do I need to feed them / cover them up lightly / do anything else?

L

I think that as long as the nest is secure, which it now seems to be, you need to just sit back and let nature take its course. Putting any sort of brolly or cover over the top is likely to freak the parents out even more. It's a good sign that they're still hanging around so they're probably just waiting for you to get out of the way.
If you start trying to feed or do anything else you'll definitely scare off mum and dad, which means the chicks won't survive. Mum will come back to keep them warm and dry if possible.

Thanks everyone, I feel awful I think I'm too soft! Murderer indeed - or to be confirmed !

Just wanted to know I'd done what I could really, the trees really need a brutal hacking back, I don't want to do it now!

Anyway, Dad has been back to feed and the mother was flapping about so think they're ok.

Was only a few years ago I might have unknowingly killed off the hedgehogs, but thats another story... overgrown garden here we come

That makes you a serial killer then.:p

I've got a similar dilemma in that there's a birds nest in a honeysuckle which I need to cut down to refence. At the moment it's a waiting game to see if the chicks fly the next before the very unsecure fence blows over in the next high wind.

You have done the right thing buy putting it back and not touching or adding anything else.
If the parents leave the nest (which is highly unlikely from what you have written) take the birds (nest and all) to the local animal rescue centre......rspca, pdsa will know where your nearest one is.
My son works at one. The staff are all trained to look after whatever you have there.

oh no! I'm sure it will be fine, we have a similar issue with a fence at the front, but are being stubborn because there are roses and clems flowering up it!

Good luck, think we are all too sensitive!!

Ah that is fantastic, I might have thought they'd think I was mad if I hadn't read your post! I last rang them about a dead kitten in the road, the rspca told me to ring the Highways agency.

I thought they would just be there to clear it up, and the poor thing had a collar and was really young so I called a friend who nicely picked it up and took it to a local vet, at least the owner knew what happened to it..

Hopefully they're old enough to fly the nest anytime soon anyway.

But this can also serve as a reminder not to mess about with the trees so early in the year :)

Agree with Ash there......leave trees/bushes/hedges alone from March to September.

Hope your blackbirds do fine :)
