Who would you use?

Well, my principles are going out of the window now.

Reasonable quotes for my daughter on her car.

Budget - they even want a £20 fee for the proof of ncd later.

Autodirect - they want fees for everything, and most appear to run into 3 figures, but appear to send the renewal letter free of charge, which may have proof of no claims on it. But they don't say.

Yes - search for fee on their website and it links to a news item on fees for roaming with a mobile. (?)

And they all break my rule of having dodgy names as well.

Has anyone used them, and had good service. In the sense of we don't intend to claim, if she has an accident, we''ll sweep our car up quietly, and buy another, she needs the pieces of paper, at the right times. If someone has to claim off her, they can have the opinion of the service.

Next tranche is in the next hundred pound up band, and most use BISL as well, but at least don't appear to mug you as soon as you log on to the website.

They all come in a lot dearer, or won't quote.

    £100+ dearer

DirectDial ,and Diamond are in the frame now as well, DirectDial are similar t&c's to Budget, Diamond, - I can't find any again on the website.

I'd use Diamond, real people to talk to (UK office hours), outside office hours you get diverted to Canada - overly smiley and helpful, nah that's unkind, she was trying to be really helpful - but it just felt a bit forced and false - give me a sarky person in Cardiff during office hours any time - GSOH - and haggle-able.

Saying that, the above is my experience with Elephant - all part of the same group; but I wimped out and paid £120+ more to stay with RSA through work. Ho Hum.

Well, another one that's come up £100 cheaper on quidco compare is .........Swintons!
£100 cheaper than their website, and £100 cheaper than other comparison sites, and a massive £300 cheaper than phoning the local office.
I know most people wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, but our local office is very good, insurance is with Sabre, the quote from quidco went through fairly well, just a couple of changes to the quote on Swintons (address repeated the first line twice, and it changed "parked on drive" to "private property", and it's still quoting the same price.

    Mmmm?

They're based in Halifax, that's just their nature, they were always the same to us too (I worked for Admiral). I always found them really nice to talk to, like they were being spoon fed sugar or something :)

Take it you mean Halifax, Canada. Yes, can't fault their cheeriness, but a large part of me would rather have competent and knowledgeable about the product.

Well, we have had a look at Diamond, and Swintons.

Swintons won in the end, with Sabre.
Company I've heard of, (and used before)
English call centres (in fact we were in town, outside the office when they rang us to tell us they were sending the documents, so we have those already)
Better information on the website, and visible pricing and fees.
    Not a silly name.

I've used them before, I know they give out all the paperwork, they don't offer to autorenew unless you pay by direct debit (but they have sent out renewals contradicting this, so they do need watching).
As all we want is the piece of paper, and probably couldn't afford to make a claim, it's not too bad value.
Although interestingly the premium was only £8 cheaper if we changed the voluntary excess from £0 to £500, so even for me that was a no-brainer.

And I didn't have to succumb and lose my principles.
(And they were a reasonable price in the end)

Sometimes a voluntary excess can be false economy
