Crisis Loan

I got a letter today from the jobcentre saying that they were going to start deducting money from my benefits (I get employment and support benefit (ESA)). I phoned the jobcentre and they told me that I needed to phone the social fund line. They turned round and said to me that I need to repay 2 crisis loans dated 7th April 2008 and 4 March 2009. What I want to know is this; is there a time limit on repayment of a crisis loan? I mean, it has taken them 3 years to get in contact with me. I had completely forgotton about it. I really hope you can help me.

No time limit on them being able to take repayments out of future benefits no.
After 6years of non payment they could no longer take you to court for the debts but they can take back from your benefits indefinitely until they are paid.

and where else do you think the repayments for a crisis loan would come from?

Of course you have to pay them back. They were loans, not gifts. The authorities have been generous indeed in allowing so much time between lending you the money and then asking for it back. If the repayment schedule is going to cause you undue hardship you can ask approach them again and ask for the repayments to be extended over a longer time frame.

The OP's had the cash back in 2008 and 2009 when not working, presumably for a short while the OP was working and repayments naturally stopped. Now the OP is not working again (seems a bit of a serial offender in that department), the dole office want repayments from the dole money, as that is how the system works. Can't see why repayments shouldn't be made.

To be fair, you have also had three years to put a couple of quid a month aside to repay it.

They never said it annoyed them, they just asked a question, i don't see why people are jumping at the OP. I do agree, however, that you had the money and so have to pay it back, as said before, just call them and say you can't afford what they are saying you have to pay and just pay back a smaller amount over a longer time (if that is the issue you have)
