tapping central heating pipes

My central heating pipes are so noisy when the heating starts up. Because of the cold weather it starts up now early in the morning but the radiators (or their pipes) start knocking/tapping, quite loudly - first about once a second, then getting quicker and quicker until it stops, but then it repeats it all again. It appears to stop when the temperature reaches the thermostat temperature.
This is not funny when I'm trying to have a hard-earned lie-in, or have been awake half of the night.
What does anyone suggest to a layperson please?

This is similar to another thread running on the board.
I suspect the pipes are straining against an obstruction - usually where they come out of the floor or it could be under the floor.
As the pipes expand with heat they cause a racket against the wood.
We had a similar problem recently with our bedroom rad. It turned out to be the laminate flooring. I trimmed it back around the pipes and the noise dissapeared overnight.0
