Talk about insurance mix up.
Will try and keep it to the point?
Took out new insurance in December 2010. Old insurance company sent out proof of NCB, which was wrong. So requested a new correct one, this took 4 months to sort out the correct proof, in which time the new insurance company cancelled my policy. I then went online to get insurance, got it and paid for it upfront for a year, got a call that very same day stating that the new policy was invalid as it was underwritten by the original new insurance company.
So ok, i paid what would be the extra and sent off the correct NCB, when they received this they would refund me the difference and my policy would stand.
In the meantime I was being chased by a DCA for £135 which was the difference on my new original policy with NCB and without.
You still with me.
I then got a letter in the post stating that they had refunded me the full amount and that my policy was cancelled, this letter took over a week to reach me with the date of cancellation being 5 days previous.
Basically I was uninsured for 5 days without me knowing it.
It has all been sorted now and have "we are very sorry telephone calls".
Rant over.

I totally agree, I should be in regular contact with my insurance company every week to make sure that I am insured and also I should have checked my CC statement to see the refund.
Just shows you that insurance companies can still screw up.I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

It's a shame askmib.com has a captcha to prevent automated querying, with the current trend towards computers and internet connections in cars someone could make an app that tells you if you are still insured every time the car is turned on.0

No, you might be on private land, such as a race track, or the driver could have trade insurance, or the insurer just forgot to update the bloody database.
I'd use such an app to tell me to go back inside the house and get all my documentation.
It would, however, reduce "honest mistakes" such as the one in the other thread, and also help to prevent situations where you genuinely had no idea, such as in this thread.
Edit: FWIW, when the insurer just randomly cancels like this, they are actually still liable for anyone you hit until such time as they have gotten the certificate back or received a signed statement from you saying that you have lost it. Doesn't stop them from coming after you for the money though.0
