Iphone/ipad email probs plus one and one...

I've got an iphone and an ipad, and until recently I was able to send my emails from both via IMAP (please forgive me, I'm a bit techno-rubbish). In the past week, my ipad has been fine, allowing me to send out and send in, but the iphone has been playing up and will only allow mail to come in.
I've been to O2 and to the Apple store and they have deleted the account from the iphone and reinstated it, but still the emails just sit there. They seem to think it may be a problem with the server. This is one and one...which I see hasn't fared too well on this website.
I have tried emailing them but it tells me my password is incorrect, even though it will allow me to log in to my mail via Safari.
What I'm wondering is this. Does anybody know if one and one are now, by default, forcing people into their 1&1mailXchange, which allows you to have 'smartphone access on the road', at the princely sum of 9.99 a month?? It's the only reason I can think of for it allowing me to access emails via Safari and on my ipad but not on my iphone.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks, everyone.
