Claiming From Sta Travel insurance

Hi, I hope someone can help.
This summer I planned to travel across America for a month with a friend who was already on a world trip. We planned to meet in LA and fly home from New York together a month later.
The flights in to La and out of NY are booked separate however myself and my friend booked car hire together, hostels together and an internal flight from Vegas to Baltimore together. All these things have both our names on the bookings.
My friend broke his ankle last week and is coming home so the trip may need to be cancelled. I looked at my STA Travel Blue premium cover policy that I took out when booking my flight with STA Travel and it says I am covered for cancellation for illness or injury to a travel companion with medical proof of injury/illness from a doctor.
Even though our flights into LA and out of NY are separate individual bookings would the inertial flight booking, car booking and hostel bookings be sufficient evidence for me to prove to the insurance company that my friend was my travel companion?
I intend to claim my flight ticket costs and if possible my hostel and car deposits back on the policy. My flight ticket is unfortunately non transferable and non refundable hence the claim!
Cheers.

Towergate, the underwriters, can be exceptionally variable in their strictness of application of definitions - not an accidental thing but is intentional and is subject to the negotiation with the likes of Sta Travel (the lower the price Sta want to pay the less benefit of the doubt their customers will get - it has no relation to what you as the end customer pay or what the policy is titled).
I would say that you have a strong arguement but it isn't guaranteed0 -
Thanks for that. I shall dig out as much evidence as I can find!! the policy is very wordy like most but hopefully if I do have to cancel the my case is strong enpough.
