replacement or repair of faulty tv?

I bought a 42" Samsung plasma tv from Dixon's in December last year. Decided to splash out for Xmas progs, 2nd half of the football season and Wimbledon. Last week (just over 6 months after I bought it) the picture started going dark and then cutting out.

Dixon's referred me to Samsung who advised to get a download from their website but by this time there was no picture whatsoever so couldn't navigate the tv's menu to use the download. Samsung then redirected me to Dixons who would only offer to have the tv checked and repaired (despite my request for a replacement and expressed dissatisfaction when this was refused).

The TV will be collected for repair on Thu 30 June and won't be returned before Sun 10 July at the earliest - so I'll be without a TV for the rest of Wimbledon! Can this be fair? Is there anything more I can do?

Sorry, it is within their rights to fix the tv. The timescale is also within the acceptable levels, you can try and ask for a loan tv, but as a luxury item they don't need to agree.

You have a computer and internet connection right?

Watch the Tennis on BBC sports page live.

Also what Bris says is right, you must allow the retailer a reasonable amount of time to solve the problem (be it a repair, replacement, refund) and 10 days isn't bad.
  • Stick a want it ad on your local freecycle or in a shop window.

Old style CRT TV's are just about worthless nowadays so I wouldn't be surprised to if you find someone who has one they just want to get rid of.
It won't be the most advanced bit of kit going, but as long as the picture is reasonable it should do you for a couple of weeks.
