Cheapest option by train to London

Im trying to plan a last minute trip into London tomorrow 21st, and am snowed under by all the fare options and prices.

Im travelling from Letchworth Garden City at around 3pm, into kings cross but need to get to waterloo and so im guessing an all day travel card is going to be best. Trouble is, ill travel into london off-peak, but will be using the underground at peak i think, 4-7pm?

Ill be heading home around midnight.

Are there any good voucher codes for trains, if not what is my cheapest option?

Kind regards
Greg

How often do you make journeys into London?

If it's often, you may be as well to get an Oyster card, as this would reduce the cost of of your tube journeys substantially. But this would only really be economically viable if you go to London a few times a year.

Buy an off peak ticket then with WAGN, without the tube options (or First capital wankatron, or whatever they are called these days), and then just buy a Zone 1-2 peak tube ticket when you get there.

If you go to www.nationalrail.co.uk and enter 'Letchworth Garden City' to 'London Waterloo', it looks like you can buy a cheap day return which includes the second leg of the journey on the underground.

But that would be off peak tube, which you can't use during peak hours.

But isn't off-peak tube defined as "Can be used from 0930 Mondays to Fridays, all day Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, on the day of validity and for any journey that starts before 0430 on the following day."?

See what i mean! Ive looked on the national rail website but their information isnt at all clear about when is peak and when is off peak.

    Any ideas?

    What is my cheapest option?
