Salon hair colour too expensive

2

Comments

  • I was paying £48 a time to have my hair coloured at a salon- usually about every 4 weeks as I am naturally dark and was having my hair coloured a bright red. TBH it was taking 3 hours each time and the colour faded very quickly. So now I buy the Feria colourants which I find the colour lasts longer and they are only around £5 a box. I did change salons though when I needed a trim as I felt a bit erm I don't know, I felt like they might question why they weren't colouring my hair anymore, stupid I know! :o

This is something I'm struggling with too at the moment - as a fake blonde it's actually getting stupidly expensive so I'm currently looking into cheaper salons (in more residential areas than high street) or getting it done at the college/as a hair model in salon. I briefly flirted with the idea of a DIY job but after having to go through a period of time with orange hair in my teens thanks to Sun-In, I'll give it a miss.

    £54 a month?????????:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Heck that's steep! Not so bad maybe if it was every 6-8 weeks, but monthly OMG!!!!

I dye my daughters hair blonde every couple of months with a £5 pack - and it looks as good as if she'd had it done professionally. In theory, she should be able to do it herself, but with long hair its easier to have someone help so you can make sure all the back and roots are covered evenly.

I also dye my own - my hair is shortish so its not difficult. Just remember to put vaseline on ears, neck and forehead before you start, then you wont have any coloured skin!! I considered going to the hairdressers to get mine coloured as the red fades quite quickly, but talking to friends who do this, they have the same trouble.

Basically now, I colour it when it's faded to ginger - usually about 6 weeks later. £5 is the maximum I pay for a pack now, but I honestly cant say that the expensive ones I've tried in the past are any better. The only difference is you get better gloves in the more expensive packs! On the positive side with the fading, I never need to worry about the roots being majorly different, but it still covers any grey hairs that may be there.

I certainly wouldnt feel obliged to keep booking appts - and certainly not every 4 weeks.

Sun-In was always rubbish - didnt lighten that well and left hair all dry and horrible feeling! The new dyes work much better :)

I also gave up on my hairdresser that I'd been going to for years, my Mum still uses him and he always asks about me!

I was paying £55 every six weeks and just couldn't afford it any more, so I now use a mobile hairdresser who is absolutely fab, I buy the colour, a Garnier dark blonde one £4ish, she then puts the colour on and cuts it and charges me £20, so it costs under £25 all together.

I'm much happier with the colour as well, when I had it done at the salon it always used to go a bit orange looking after a couple of weeks.

I still can't bring myself to do it! :o John Frieda have brought something out that looks a bit SUn-In esque, they had a similar product out a few eyars ago that I actually quite liked.

Ooh this sounds good, I might see if there are any mobile hairdressers.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Hi, thanks for your replies. Its a tricky one this as I am very tempted to go back to colouring my own hair. I was talking to my friend earlier who goes to the same salon as me and put a word for me to go back and she said that personally if she were me she wouldn't home colour again after getting my hair back right at the salon but to be honest my hair doesn't feel in any better condition and my boyfriend says the same thing, he says he can't tell I spend £54 a month on my hair and that it looked OK before. My friend however is one who will not put any heating on in winter to save on bills but will happily fork out loads of money at salons which is up to her but I would rather spend that money on something else. I don't mind paying this out on say make up that lasts for months but a hair colour that grows out after a month is a bit much.

Someone on this board recommended the red boxes of permanent hair dye from Wilkinsons, which cost £1. Just wanted to say that I used one yesterday, and am thrilled with the result. The colour looks nice and natural, my hair still seems to be in good condition ... and I managed to avoid making too much of a mess in the bathroom! It's only the second time I have coloured my hair myself (the first time I used something much more expensive which did not cover the grey), but I cannot afford to go to a salon any more. So, a happy and very cheap result, thanks to MSE posters.

Hello The Cake-I have previously recommended this dye (although not sure if its my post that you read)-just glad to hear someone else likes it-excellent value for £1-I use shade 17-natural dark brown and it covers my grey (loads of it) perfectly. Like you I have used much more expensive dyes that havent touched the grey-on me they just seem to send it ginger which isnt a good look.
Dye is in a red box, is called "Simply Colour" and is made by Mellor & Russell.

Home dying has not worked well for me. After colouring it myself for ages, I fancied a change of colour and my hair went black. As my natural hair colour is mousy, it looked awful. My mobile hairdresser sorted it out for me, but I'm too cautious to chance dying it myself again so, for me, it's a worthwhile expense. My hairdresser is lovely, and it's far cheaper than getting it done in a salon.
