The contract is simply stating the hours that you will be paid. You are required from 8 until 5 which equates to 40 hours per week. However, you then need to deduct 1 hour per day as lunch which is unpaid therefore total paid hours will be 35.

Think you need to check your figures too.

    8 to 5 (9 hours) - 5 days a week is 45

    less 5 x 1 hour = 40:cool:

no mistake there, all perfectly normal

As two other people have pointed out to other posters, you need to check your understanding of time.

It's either 37.5 hours, or you get an extra 30 minute break during the day!

Eh? The start and end times are on the hour, the lunch break is one hour. How to get an odd half an hour for the week?

Sorry but neither of these questions can be answered by anyone on a forum such as this. Your best bet would be to contact the employer who issued the contract and ask them.

The question "Do you think there is a mistake in the contract?" has a clear answer - "Yes, there is a mistake in the contract."

are you starting at 8am and finishing at 5pm or are you doing 8 hours a day between the times of 8am and 5pm?

Nope,I just read it differently to you - they could start at between 8am -9am and work 8 hours, (subject to shifts within the dept, I also assumed) with an hour unpaid lunch.... simples.

although I am not used to a job with only 35 hours, even 40 hours or 45 hrs, 50-60 is the norm in my industry so I don't clock watch either :p 8a-8p with no lunch is the norm:eek:

Yes it seems like there is flexibility in start times- my friend works like this and starts as early as she can so she finishes at 4 every day (that's in a prison) and in my old job we had to work 8:30- 5:30 but with a half hour flexibility, so long as there was someone manning the phones between those times we were left to work it out between us. Still, it is probably better to check with the employer to make sure!
