Faulty TV, what are my rights?

Hello, This is my Uncles tv but as he is disabled its down to me to help him sort it.
He bought a Sony TV in September 2009 for a total sum of £2199. It was bought from a TV shop in the next town. It was advertised as coming with a 5 year warranty also. During the last week the picture has started to become off and on with it going dark then going off. Its getting progressively worse. We contacted the shop who passed us onto Sony to deal with them (fair enough that's not a problem and i don't really need to speak to the shop again as its out of their hands) My mum spoke to Sony who said that as 'the warranty card was not received by them there is nothing they can do as its not in warranty' First of all there was no warranty card, the retailer said that nothing needed to be done with it and the warranty automatically came as with quite a few of Sony's products. I plan on ringing up tomorrow and speak to them myself and see what can be done.
2 years for a £2k tv is not a long time at all, its not watched much either. The shop said it sounds like the screen is going (could have said that myself mind you from what it looks like)
Any ideas on what can be done if they say there is nothing they can do?

You need to speak to the retailer again.
You need to understand whether it is the retailer or manufacturer who is responsible for the five year warranty.

I will speak to them again, however i do believe its Sony that offer the warranty as they do with quite a few of their products regardless of where it was purchased (from what i gathered from a quick google search) The retailer it was bought from was Yorkshire Media Centre.
I'll give them a call tomorrow and see if i can get any more information.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0 -
Don't let the retailer pass you onto sony. Your contract is with them, not sony. Might be worth taking it up with the retailer since it's their responsibility.

But if there is a five year warranty, in addition to statutory rights, provided by the manufacturer, then that may be another useful avenue to explore.
OP, the reason I asked who was responsible for the five year warranty was that there are some retailers, notably John Lewis and Richer Sounds, who provide their own free five year warranty.
And of course there is usually an option to purchase an extended warranty at the point of sale.0
